Sabbatical Leave

A student may take sabbatical leave if he or she can prove reasonable necessity according to § 65 section 5 German Universities Law (Hochschulgesetz, HG).

Important reasons are:
(Under reasons marked * the students are exempt from the semester fee)

• studying at a university outside Germany (does not apply for European courses) or at a language school outside Germany (*).
• semester of practical work or a practical in connection with one’s course
• illness (*)
• compulsory military or community service (*)
• care or support of
• spouse
• registered partner
• a relative of first degree of lineage
• in-laws of first degree of lineage
• pregnancy or childcare
• serving a prison sentence (*)
• other reasons of equal importance

Sabbatical leave is only possible if applied for before the re-registration deadlines of each summer and winter term.

The following items must be produced:

• completed application for sabbatical leave
• evidence of reasons given
• evidence that the semester fee has been paid

 

Please note:

Sabbatical leave is not possible during the first semester! Sabbatical leave is only granted for one semester, in cases of compulsory service it is granted for the duration of the service. Students on sabbatical are not entitled to achieve assessments or take examinations at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in the respective semester. This does not apply to examinations which need to be retaken because of a fail and to assessments for the sabbatical or semester of practical work itself.
