Design Engineering

The degree programme leading to a Design Engineering degree encompasses the two core study areas of textiles and fashion. In particular, this degree programme aims to combine design and technology in equal parts. This combination provides the graduates with a broad basic knowledge, which is the ideal preparation for meeting the requirements of an innovative and global textile and clothing industry.

The term Design is defined as conscious shaping or arrangement. The engineering part of the study is constituted by training in the construction of industrially, technically manufactured products. In order for a product to successfully enter the market, a multidisciplinary knowledge is needed during the development process. Design engineers therefore combine construction and design competence.

In order to gain admission to this course a prior aptitude test must be passed.

Aptitude Test

The Department of Textile and Apparel Engineering requires students to pass an aptitude test, or EFP, as a prerequisite for admission to the Design Engineering program. The exam is held once each year. To participate, you must register using the online form (link in the download section to the right) by May 31, 2021.

Fill out this form completely and carefully. If you have any problems or questions, please feel free to contact us at the email or phone address listed below. After receipt of the application, we will send you a written invitation to the examination in good time before the date of the EFP, with all details on the date, location and organizational procedure.

The EFP takes place digitally and by post.

The examination takes place separately for the fields of study "Textile" and "Fashion". It can be repeated a maximum of two times if the candidate fails. As a rule, passed aptitude tests remain valid for three subsequent enrollment dates. A summary and details of the procedure for the aptitude test can also be found as a PDF file "Explanations" in the download area "EFP".

We have compiled frequently asked questions and answers on a separate page. You can access this page via the "FAQ" link.

"The unique selling point of the degree programme at the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology is definitely its strong practical orientation. Even in the basic studies, you have the opportunity to implement your own designs in the laboratories and thus gain a better understanding of the entire textile chain. In my current job, it is not only the specific technical knowledge that helps me, but also the ability acquired during my studies to deal with different main topics at the same time and to work together in interdisciplinary teams. I can recommend prospective students to get a taste of the different professions in the textile industry through internships before or at the beginning of their studies - there are so many different directions!"

“The design engineering program combines creative design with technological fundamentals. This means that every design for an outfit or a textile surface that is created can be implemented in the university's laboratories. It was precisely this aspect that had a major influence on my decision to take this course of study. I especially appreciate that there are no limits to my personal and professional development, so working on interdisciplinary projects is strongly encouraged, as is gaining practical experience in industry. For this reason, I used the time of my bachelor's degree to complete both an internship in a fashion company and a semester abroad at the partner university VIA University College in Denmark. After successfully completing my BA at the university, I had the feeling that I had not yet seen everything, as the choice of subjects and projects is huge, which is why I decided to also complete my master's degree at the university.”

The career prospects after a successful Bachelor's or Master's degree at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences Department of Textile and Clothing Technology are very versatile due to the broad and practice-oriented education, as well as the proximity to industry. Graduates work in a wide variety of industries such as e-commerce, sustainability, product development in the field of filters, medicine, smart textiles, safety clothing, automotive, wind power, fashion, climate protection, ...

Employment at the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology | Semester abroad and study abroad in Sweden

"I work as a research assistant for dobby and jacquard weaving at the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology. I particularly like the combination of creative work and the technical realization on the weaving machines.

I completed my Bachelor DI Textile at this department and spent a semester abroad in Borås, Sweden. The experience of being on my own in a foreign country and getting to know interesting people from all over the world was formative and led to several friendships. I was enthusiastic about the teaching there with its artistic approach, because of which I completed my master's degree there. These experiences can be combined well with the teaching at our department, since every artistic, creative idea should ultimately be realizable and must be adapted to the technical conditions. Here, you can benefit from the wealth of experience of both the teachers and the technicians."
