Foreign Languages at the Hochschule Niederrhein
The Language Centres are responsible for the foreign language course organisation at the Hochschule Niederrhein. In close cooperation with the faculties, they plan and carry out the language courses. Both curricular and extra-curricular language courses range from general language courses, preparatory courses, refresher courses to varied language courses for specific purposes.
The language courses are divided into five proficiency levels (levels A1-C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Particular focus is placed on 'English for Specific Purposes' by offering specialised courses with content which is relevant to the individual fields of study. These specialised courses are continuously adapted to the faculties' requirements.
In the extra-curricular courses students can learn French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Turkish, Chinese, Arabic, Swedish and German as a Foreign Language.
The individual learning process is supported by obligatory supplementary language training in the multimedia rooms of the Language Centres in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach as well as by practice exercises which are available on the Moodle learning platform of the Language Centres.
After having successfully completed a course, certificates are awarded with detailed information on the course content and level. These certificates can be submitted with job applications.
If language courses are obligatory in a degree programme, they are recorded in the Transcript of Records.
The Language Centre is a member of the Association of Language Centres, Language Teaching Institutes and Institutes of Foreign Languages (AKS). This association represents the field of foreign language teaching in Higher Education.
