New Course in Summer Semester 2026: Cross Design Engineering in VR & AR

In the summer semester 2026, the interdisciplinary master’s module “Cross Design Engineering in VR and AR” (MA TP TP25-125) will launch at Hochschule Niederrhein.

The module connects Design, Engineering and Management in an immersive learning environment using Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (XR). Students from FB 07 (Textile and Clothing Technology) collaborate with students from FB 08 (Business and Economics) to develop sustainable textile, fashion and business concepts for the future.

The focus lies on experimental, co-creative work in virtual spaces. So that ideas are not only discussed, but directly sketched, modeled, tested and iterated in VR — combining digital design tools with analog sketching and concepting approaches – constructing textile design solutions virtually is the focus on.

Focus Topic – Summer Semester 2026
Case Study: Role Models in Design and Entrepreneurship How do role models shape design, business and leadership? How can these insights be translated into sustainable and future-oriented models for the creative and textile industries?

What to expect
•Sketching and designing the future in XR environments
•Working with digital design tools and analog sketching / concepting methods
•Interdisciplinary teams from design, engineering and management
•Sustainable design and design management methods
•Virtual sketching, modeling and evaluation
•Project work based on real-world challenges

Module Structure
1. Creating and Managing Textiles & Fashion in AR
Development of sustainable textile and fashion concepts in XR — from research to virtual prototyping.

2. Sketching / Managing in XR
Sketching as a design, thinking and system tool — from spatial concepts to future circular economy models.

Module Lead
Prof. Dr. Dipl.-Des. Marina-Elena Wachs

In collaboration with lecturers from the Faculty of Business and Economics (FB 08): Prof. Dr. Sue Rossano-Rivero (FB08), Dr. Lennart Hofeditz (FB08), Dr. Felix Brünker (FB07).
